Use Case 1: Cooling sealing bars in packaging machines – vortex tube
THE CASE: An automatic packaging machine for forming, filling, and sealing packages a variety of products at high speed. The machine's 315°C hot, blunt-edged cutting and sealing bar seals and cuts the plastic film at high speed.
The sealing rod and metal clamp lower, pressing the polyethylene film onto a rubber cushion. The metal clamp makes contact with the film first, holding it taut, and the cutting and sealing rod then presses down on the film, sealing and separating the two layers. The temperature of the metal clamp must not exceed 65°C; otherwise, it will result in defective or mispackaged packaging.

SOLUTION: A type 106 vortex tube directs cooled air through a 3mm steel tube that runs along each metal guard, thus keeping the temperature of the metal guard below 65°C. This prevents the metal guard from unintentionally melting the foil located next to the actual sealing line.
SUMMARY: Due to their high cooling capacity, maintenance-friendly design and low equipment costs, vortex tubes are used for selective cooling in numerous automated processes.

Use Case 2: Extraction of gas samples and moisture removal – vortex tube and blow-off device
THE CASE: Reliable sampling equipment is required to determine the oxygen level in stored gas quantities. Gas samples must also be dehumidified, as moisture would damage the sensitive oxygen monitoring device.

SOLUTION: A type 106-8-H vortex tube was used for moisture removal, and a type 901 B transvector beam unit was used for drawing gas samples through the analyzer. Dehumidification of the gas samples is carried out using a small heat exchanger supplied with a cold air jet from the vortex tube. The sample is fed vertically upwards through a cooled tube, and the moisture evaporates on the inside of the tube. Droplets form and fall into a collection chamber below the tube.
SUMMARY:
The very low flow and cooling requirements of this application are ideally suited to the transvector jet device and the vortex tube of type 106. Conventional pumps and Frigen machines would have increased costs and complexity many times over, while offering significantly lower reliability.
